The family of Liam Riazati, the toddler who tragically died after a driver collided with a Richmond Hill daycare last week, is holding a public memorial service this Sunday morning. During the event, they will also be calling for accountability regarding the incident and advocating for improved safety measures at Ontario childcare facilities.
The memorial for Liam is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Richmond Hill, according to a news release issued by a family spokesperson.
“Liam’s life was tragically cut short, but his story must serve as a catalyst for change,” the spokesperson stated.
In their message, the family honored their only child and grandson, describing Liam as a joyful, curious, and loving little boy. They remembered him for his infectious laughter and bright personality, noting that he adored balloons, balls, flowers, and teddy bears.
“Liam was a radiant child who brought light and happiness into the lives of everyone around him,” the family shared.
The family is also demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Liam’s death. They emphasize the need for stricter safety regulations at childcare centers and increased public awareness to prevent other families from experiencing similar heartbreak.
They expressed concern over the safety of the location where the tragedy occurred, noting that the daycare’s placement in a commercial plaza, adjacent to a parking lot and behind glass walls, is not an ideal environment to protect children.
“No parent should ever have to question whether drop-off is safe,” the statement read. “No child should have to feel the fear that some children experienced that day.”
They concluded by saying, “His loss has left an emptiness that can never be filled, but his memory will always be our greatest treasure.”
Following the incident, a man in his 70s has been charged with one count of dangerous operation causing death and two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm. The crash occurred at First Roots Early Education Academy last Wednesday. Police confirmed that Liam Riazati was pronounced dead at the hospital, while seven other children and three adults were hospitalized with injuries.
